An old classic burned out motel. That's the Sundowner Motel near the Salton Sea. Although this motel joint no longer takes in travelers, the sign still reflects an era that once was.

Another roadside motel is the Ruta Motel in Indio. The sign out front is similar to many that used to litter the roadside of each town.

Palm Desert Lodge (Closed)
Palm Desert, CA

Despite restrictive signage laws in the Coachella Valley, a fine roadside sign is the Palm Desert Lodge, with their 1950's neon sign on Highway 111 at Deep Canyon. Not sure if the paint is in original colors, but the sign itself is still a real eye-catcher.

UPDATE 04/08 : The Palm Desert Lodge closed on April 1, 2008 and will soon be demolished to make way for redevelopment and a Longs drug store. The marquee has now been listed on eBay. The Palm Desert Lodge dates back to the 1950's. 04-08

The Indio area also houses the Star Lodge with, you guessed it, a star on top of its sign.

Holiday Motel
Indio, CA

A fine googie-like motel in Indio is the Holiday Motel. Perhaps tracing back to its Route 99 roots, the Holiday sports the familiar arrow beckoning travelers to sample its hospitality.
