Standing high above the street, this friendly Lumberjack has been welcoming visitors to Portland's Kenton neighborhood since 1959. With his bright red plaid shirt, broad smile, and towering height, he's about as approachable as a 31-foot giant can be.
Built to celebrate Oregon's Centennial, Paul Bunyan quickly became one of the city's best-known landmarks. Although many people mistake him for a classic fiberglass Muffler Man, he's actually a custom-built concrete and steel giant, making him one of a kind.
When light rail construction threatened his longtime location, the neighborhood refused to let their oversized greeter disappear. Instead, he was carefully moved a short distance away and later given a full restoration, looking every bit as cheerful today as he did decades ago.
UPDATE: Portland's Paul Bunyan continues to greet motorists and MAX riders from his corner in Kenton, where he remains one of Oregon's most beloved roadside landmarks. 07-26
