Point Moore's Whiskey (Closed)

Here's an old sign that makes sure you know exactly where to turn. The streamlined Moore's Point Whiskey sign points the way into this longtime liquor stop along Versailles Road in Frankfort, KY. With that big arrow and vintage lettering, missing the entrance probably wasn't much of a problem.

Moore's Point operated here for more than 37 years, becoming a familiar sight for anyone traveling this stretch of road. The liquor store eventually closed around 2020, leaving the fate of that great old sign in question.

Good news. The building found another use when Marshall's Bar & Grill opened here in 2023, and the old Moore's Point sign was kept right where it belonged along the roadside.

UPDATE: The Moore's Point sign still survives outside the former liquor store, now home to Marshall's Bar & Grill. Whether the old neon still lights up at night is unclear. 08-26

Don's Whiskey (Gone)

Here's another old whiskey sign that was hard to miss along Louisville's busy Bardstown Road. The Don's Whiskey sign came complete with a big whiskey bottle pointing out the liquor store at the Bon Air Manor Shopping Center.

Look closely and the sign had apparently been around even longer than Don's. Old lettering beneath the bottle suggests it originally advertised Larry's Liquors before being changed over to Don's. Either way, that bottle certainly got the message across.

Don's eventually closed, and the old sign hung around for a while afterward. Unfortunately, it didn't survive the changes along Bardstown Road.

UPDATE: The Don's Liquors sign was removed by 2014. The shopping center remains, but the big whiskey bottle is gone. 08-26

Schreck's Baxter Liquors

Now here's a liquor store sign with some character. The Kentucky Liquor Store marquee along Baxter Avenue is shaped like the state of Kentucky and even comes complete with a Southern gentleman pointing the way. Hard to ask for much more from a liquor store sign.

The store itself is better known as Schreck's Baxter Liquors and has been around since the 1940s. Founder Mike Schreck reportedly designed the sign himself, giving the neighborhood a roadside landmark that would be hard to duplicate today.

At one time it looked like this old marquee might be just another fond memory. Fortunately, this one has a happier ending.

UPDATE: Schreck's Baxter Liquors is still open at 1535 Baxter Avenue, and the great old Kentucky-shaped neon sign survives. 08-26

Drover's Inn Liquor (Demolished)

Faded almost right into the building, the old Drover's Inn Liquor lettering could still be made out along South Main Street in Paris, KY. Looks like this place had been pouring them for quite a while before the doors finally closed.

The name was a good fit for the location. Drover's Inn sat across from the old Bourbon County Stockyards, where cattle and other livestock once passed through town. The liquor business was around by at least 1961, when Drover's Inn Liquor Dispensary turns up in Kentucky court records.

By the time this shot was taken, the place was long past its prime and that painted sign was slowly disappearing along with it.

UPDATE: The old Drover's Inn building and the faded liquor sign were demolished in 2019. 08-26

Cork 'n Bottle

You certainly don't have to squint to read this one. The Cork 'n Bottle in Louisville spells things out in huge yellow letters across the front of the building, making this neighborhood liquor store pretty hard to miss while cruising down Cane Run Road.

There's nothing fancy about the place, and that's part of the appeal. Big letters, a drive-thru and plenty of Kentucky bourbon inside. Sometimes that's about all a roadside liquor store needs.

Unlike quite a few of the old liquor stops around Louisville, Cork 'n Bottle is still around. The store continues doing business at 4350 Cane Run Road, and those big yellow letters are still part of the roadside scene.

UPDATE: Cork 'n Bottle remains open along Cane Run Road, with its familiar yellow storefront signage still intact. 08-26

Last Chance Liquors

Traveling up Dickerson Pike, here's one old sign that looks like it really was down to its last chance. The neon on the Last Chance Liquors sign had seen better days when this shot was taken, but there was still enough left to make this Nashville roadside landmark worth a stop. 06-06

Last Chance has been around since 1946, and the name wasn't just clever advertising. The store once sat near the boundary between wet Nashville and dry territory farther north, making this quite literally the last chance to pick up a bottle before heading out of town.

There's even a little Nashville music lore here. Johnny Cash reportedly stopped by over the years, and more recent customers have included Kacey Musgraves and Margo Price.

And that tired old neon? It finally got another chance.

UPDATE: Last Chance Liquors is still open at 837 Dickerson Pike. In 2025, the vintage sign was restored and its neon lit up again for the first time in nearly 30 years. 08-26

Fox Meadow Liquors (Gone)

Looks like somebody forgot about part of the neon on this one. The old Fox Meadow Liquors sign stood along South Mendenhall Road in Memphis, but when this shot was taken the "Fox" portion had gone dark. That left "Meadow Liquors" glowing away for anyone passing by.

Fox Meadow Liquors was a longtime neighborhood package store at 3215 South Mendenhall Road. The old roadside sign had a simple mid-century look, and even with a few letters out, there was still enough neon left to get the message across.

The liquor store eventually changed names, and the old Fox Meadow identity disappeared with it.

UPDATE: The location now operates as Mendenhall Liquor & Wine. The original Fox Meadow Liquors sign has been altered or replaced. 08-26

Blue 4 Liquor

Now here's a liquor store sign that knows how to get your attention. The Blue 4 Liquor sign towers above Winchester Road in Memphis with a big arrow pointing toward the store and a set of neon rings up top that actually spun around.

Blue 4 had been serving this part of Memphis since 1969, operating as both a liquor store and check-cashing stop. But it's that wild old sign that makes the place worth another look. When everything was working, the neon, spinning rings and arrow must have put on quite a show after dark.

The store lasted for more than 50 years before eventually closing, but the old sign was still standing afterward.

UPDATE: Blue 4 Liquors has closed, although the building and vintage sign remain. Whether the neon and spinning rings still work is unknown. 08-26
