Looking for the Village People? Well, keep looking. This Chinatown YMCA sign points toward a neighborhood institution with a history reaching back long before those four letters became a disco singalong.

The branch began in a rented storefront in 1911. Its Sacramento Street building was dedicated in 1926, giving the organization a permanent home for its community activities.

The vertical sign adds a familiar roadside touch above the steep sidewalk. Between the storefronts and taller buildings, those large letters make a pretty handy marker for someone heading to the Y.

UPDATE: Chinatown YMCA remains open, offering fitness, swimming, and community programs. Its history dates to 1911, with the present building reaching its centennial in 2026. The earlier Julia Morgan attribution belongs to Chinatown’s separate YWCA building. 10-26
