San Gabriel, CA - The Donut Kitchen always seemed a bit of an anomaly... sitting alongside
the busy boulevard, dwarfed by fast food mega joints and sprouting up
strip malls. Yet, the Donut Kitchen went along, merrily doing its business
selling donuts out of its little stand.

Along Garvey Avenue near San Gabriel Boulevard, Donut Kitchen offered a roadside stop on a rather modest scale. The little walk-up stand had enough room to announce its specialty, with bold lettering across the brown fascia and a red-and-white scalloped awning shading the counter. Apparently selling donuts didn’t require taking over an entire shopping center.
The rooftop sign added another reason to look over. A donut-shaped cabinet sat above a rectangular “DONUTS” panel, supported by an angled metal framework. Between the lettering and the donut overhead, hungry motorists probably didn’t need much explanation.

The stand was already closed and boarded up in the 2004 view, with graffiti appearing along its lower siding. Its small footprint and striped awning remained recognizable, although the service window had finished taking orders.
UPDATE: Donut Kitchen was demolished after its closure in the early 2000s. The revised history places demolition around 2005–2006, rather than the previously reported 2003. The former stand was on Garvey Avenue near San Gabriel Boulevard, in the South San Gabriel/Rosemead area. 10-26
