Here’s another roadside sign that would have been hard to miss, this one for the New Englander Motor Court in Malden. Sitting along Route 1, the big script lettering and tall marquee helped catch the eye of drivers heading in and out of Boston. 02-08
The New Englander advertised itself as being just six miles north of Boston and offered plenty of modern comforts for its day, including air conditioning, televisions, room phones, and even background Hi-Fi music. It was also AAA approved and part of the Superior Motels group.
Over the years, the place went through several name changes, including the Broadway Inn and later OYO Hotel Malden MA Broadway.
UPDATE: The original New Englander sign has been removed. The building still stands, but it is no longer operating as a regular roadside motel and has been used for temporary shelter housing. 08-26

Check out the neon lettering on the Malden Motel marquee along Broadway in Malden. The big roadside sign was built to grab attention from passing Route 1 traffic, and that glowing MOTEL lettering certainly did the trick. 02-08
This was actually the same motel property that had earlier operated as the New Englander Motor Court. Over the years, the place went through several identities, later becoming the Broadway Inn and eventually the OYO Hotel Malden MA Broadway.
UPDATE: The Malden Motel sign has been removed. The old motel property is no longer operating as a regular roadside lodging stop and has since been used for temporary shelter housing. 08-26
Ascot Motel (Gone)

Check out the neon glow of the Ascot Motel in Atlantic City. Sitting just off the Boardwalk near the Tropicana, the Ascot was doing its part to light up a busy Jersey shore evening. Not sure if this one would survive all the changes around Atlantic City... 05-20
The Ascot dated back to the 1950s and had 73 rooms wrapped around an outdoor pool in a classic horseshoe layout. Things took a bad turn in 2006 when a large section of one of the concrete balconies collapsed, forcing the motel to temporarily close.
The Ascot name eventually disappeared in 2013, but the building itself stuck around and was renovated for later hotel use.
UPDATE: The old Ascot neon sign is gone. The motel building at Iowa and Pacific avenues has been remodeled and now operates as the Clarion Inn Atlantic City Beach and Boardwalk. 08-26
