Milk Bottles (Gone)

Cruising along Route 40 toward Mays Landing, it would have been hard to miss the Milk Jug Lady and her colorful “Jug City, USA” yard. The huge American flag was made from about 1,000 plastic milk jugs filled with dyed water. Well, that answers the question about how many jugs it took!

Josephine Stapleton started decorating the yard in 1974. She originally placed cinder blocks on the lawn to keep children from running across it, then decided lightweight milk jugs would be a little safer. The idea grew into flags, holiday scenes, Disney characters and even a life-sized milk jug version of Josephine named Jugabell.

UPDATE: The display was dismantled in 2009 after Josephine moved from the property. She passed away in 2015 at age 82. 08-26
