Wonder Bread (Closed)
Tulsa, OK

For decades, motorists traveling along Route 66 through Tulsa were greeted by something you couldn't photograph—the wonderful smell of fresh bread drifting from the nearby Wonder Bread bakery. Built in 1955, the Continental Baking Company plant became a Tulsa landmark, and generations of local school kids toured the bakery, usually leaving with a mini loaf wrapped in Wonder Bread's familiar red, yellow, and blue balloons.

Like many longtime Tulsans, plenty of travelers remember rolling down their windows as they passed by just to enjoy the aroma. Unfortunately, that chapter came to an end in 2012 when Hostess Brands filed for bankruptcy, forcing the bakery to close its doors. Although a new owner revived the Wonder Bread brand the following year, baking operations never returned to this historic Tulsa plant. 08-17

UPDATE: While the ovens have long since gone cold, the former bakery building still stands and has found new life as a commercial warehouse. The smell of fresh bread may be gone, but for many who grew up in Tulsa, it's a place that still brings back fond memories every time they drive by. 06-26
