The Top Hat Auto Wash features a gem of a sign at its Flint location. The large "AUTO WASH" lettering can be seen from the street, while the top hat-themed marquee is impossible to miss.
Located along Hemphill Road, the Top Hat Auto Wash became a familiar Flint landmark during the heyday of America's car culture. The business embraced a playful, upscale theme, using its distinctive top hat logo to suggest your car would receive first-class treatment. Its towering roadside marquee combined oversized lettering with a memorable graphic that made it one of the city's most recognizable automotive signs. The location even enjoyed a brief Hollywood moment, appearing in the 2008 basketball comedy Semi-Pro starring Will Ferrell. 06-09
UPDATE: Top Hat Auto Wash continues to operate today, preserving both its long-standing neighborhood tradition and its iconic roadside marquee. The towering "AUTO WASH" letters and signature top hat remain welcoming motorists just as they have for decades. 06-26

Not sure of the name of this car wash, but the sign is unforgettable. Check out the multi-bulb arrow, a design that was extremely popular decades ago. Even the "CAR WASH" lettering is made up of exposed light bulbs, giving the entire marquee a bright, animated look.
During the 1950s and 1960s, signs like this were designed to do more than simply identify a business—they were built to grab your attention. The giant directional arrow, lined with dozens of flashing incandescent bulbs, guided motorists straight into the wash bays, while the illuminated lettering transformed an everyday business into a roadside attraction. It's a wonderful example of the bold, eye-catching commercial design that once lined America's busiest streets. 07-11
UPDATE: The original car wash and its spectacular bulb-lit marquee are no longer standing, having disappeared during later redevelopment of the commercial corridor. While modern car washes continue to serve the area, this classic arrow sign survives only through photographs, preserving a wonderful example of mid-century roadside advertising. 06-26

Located along Jefferson Avenue in Detroit, Mr. Pops Car Wash is a brightly painted yellow building that's hard to miss. Its bold color scheme makes it one of the more distinctive roadside landmarks on the city's east side.
In the Motor City, where the automobile has always been part of everyday life, independent car washes have long competed for the attention of passing motorists. Rather than relying on flashy neon or oversized mascots, Mr. Pops made its statement with a vivid yellow exterior that transformed the entire building into a giant roadside advertisement. The cheerful color and simple design gave the business a personality all its own and helped it stand out along one of Detroit's busiest commercial corridors.
