Golden Era Shops Rocky Mountains

Edwards Furniture (Gone)
Logan, UT

Check out the script lettering on this front facade sign at Edwards Furniture in Logan, Utah.

That big pink sign really made the building hard to miss. The lettering had the kind of style you don't see much anymore, especially on old downtown storefronts. It was bold, colorful, and a little flashy, which is exactly why it worked.

For years, Edwards Furniture was a familiar sight along Main Street in Logan. The sign gave the storefront a strong mid-century look, even while the building behind it dated back much earlier. 10-06

UPDATE: Edwards Furniture closed in 2018 after a long run in downtown Logan. The building has since been repurposed, and the large pink facade sign was removed during restoration work that uncovered the older brick storefront beneath it. The sign is no longer on the building and the place is now home to Curate Company. 06-26

Felt Buchorn (Gone)
Salt Lake City, UT

This bridal shop still featured the old lettering that attempts to date back in time. This is the building for Felt-Buchorn of Salt Lake City.

What is attention catching here is the lettering across the front of the building. It has an old-fashioned look that makes the storefront feel like it belongs to another era. Even though Felt-Buchorn specialized in fine gifts and bridal registries, the sign gave the building a vintage character that stood out along South Temple.

The storefront had a quiet, old Salt Lake City look to it, especially along South Temple where older buildings and longtime businesses helped give the area much of its character. 10-06

UPDATE: Felt-Buchorn closed in 2005 after many years as a Salt Lake City gifts and bridal registry business. The building was later renovated and repurposed for other retail use becoming a New Balance store and now Lunatic Fringe. The old facade lettering has been removed. 06-26

Ferrell's (Gone)
Idaho Falls, ID

Ferrell's is a clothing store located off Broadway in Idaho Falls.

What is attention catching here is the script lettering across the front of the building. It has an old-fashioned look that makes the storefront feel like it belongs to another era. Even though it was simply a clothing store, the sign gave the building a distinctive character that helped it stand out along Broadway.

I've always enjoyed finding old signs on everyday businesses. Not every interesting sign belongs to a motel, diner, or bowling alley. Sometimes a simple storefront sign can be just as memorable. 10-06

UPDATE: Ferrell's remains in business today, but the Broadway storefront shown here is no longer home to the company. The business relocated in 2019, and the iconic script sign was removed as part of a restoration project that uncovered the building's historic brick facade. 06-26

Molinelli's Jewelers
Pocatello, ID
Photo courtesy Dave & Debra van Hulsteyn

Along this block of old historic buildings is Molinelli's Jewelers. Check out the clock alongside the street that also advertises Molinelli's.

What is attention catching here is the clock standing out along the sidewalk. Businesses have long used clocks as a way to draw attention, but this one does double duty by serving as both a timepiece and a sign. It fits perfectly with the historic feel of downtown Pocatello.

Old street clocks like this add character to a downtown business district. They're functional, decorative, and seem to belong to another era. The Molinelli's clock has become a familiar landmark for anyone spending time in the heart of Pocatello. 10-06

UPDATE: Molinelli's Jewelers remains in business today and continues to serve customers in downtown Pocatello. Better yet, the historic street clock still stands outside the store, remaining one of the more recognizable features along this stretch of Main Street. 06-26

The Paris
Pocatello, ID
Photo courtesy Dave & Debra van Hulsteyn

The Paris is another clothing store located in Pocatello. Check out the lettering here.

What is attention catching here is the bold vertical lettering running up the corner of the building. Signs like this were designed to be seen from a distance, and this one does a great job of drawing your eye as you move through downtown Pocatello.

I've always liked signs mounted directly onto the corner of a building. They give the entire structure an identity and often become just as memorable as the business itself. In this case, the simple "The Paris" lettering turned an already interesting building into one of downtown's most recognizable landmarks. 10-06

UPDATE: The Paris closed in 2015, but the building remains an important part of downtown Pocatello. Fortunately, the iconic neon signs survive and were restored and relit in 2018, allowing this longtime landmark to continue lighting up the corner for future generations. 06-26
