Here is the Comfort Furniture Building, located on Hwy 50 in Orlando, FL. Unfortunately, word is that this furniture building is going to be destroyed in the next few weeks by its new owner. Many thanks to Henry B. Stowe for info. 12-06

The Comfort Furniture building was hard to miss along East Colonial Drive. Its sharp angles and bold geometric design looked more like something from the Space Age than a furniture store. Even if you had no plans to buy a couch or dining room set, the building itself was enough to make you slow down for a better look. It was one of those places that proved roadside architecture didn't have to flash neon to get your attention.

Originally built in the early 1960s as a Modernage Furniture store, the building later became Comfort Furniture and remained a familiar sight for decades. Long before every shopping center started looking the same, businesses often had their own distinctive style, and this one certainly did. The unusual roofline and clean mid-century design gave it a personality that made it easy to remember long after driving past. It fit right in with the optimistic architecture of the era, when even an everyday furniture store could become a roadside landmark.

UPDATE: The Comfort Furniture is gone. It is now a bank and a Panda Takeout. Before it was destroyed, it was for a time the Kane Furniture store, and that was what locals generally called it. Many thanks to Al Pergande for update. 03-09
