Welcome to the El Charro Cafe near downtown Flagstaff. Located at 409 S. San Francisco Street in the historic Southside district, this beloved neighborhood cafe served up excellent home-style Mexican food and evening entertainment for more than fifty years.

Positioned just south of Route 66, the independent restaurant became an essential culinary and social anchor for generations of Northern Arizona University (NAU) students, faculty, and local families. After a celebrated half-century run, the owners officially closed the doors in September 2013, leaving a heartfelt "Thank you Flagstaff" note in the front window.

UPDATE: The El Charro Cafe and its home style food is gone. The Patio restaurant took over sometime in 2013 or 2014 and now a place called The Mayor bar is in the location today. 04-17.

UPDATE: Today, the original El Charro Cafe and its neon signage are gone, but the physical building was saved and adaptively reused. The location now operates as The Mayor, a popular retro-inspired bar and rooftop lounge. 08-26

Here's Libby's El Rey Cafe, located at 999 N. Broad Street in Globe, AZ. Opening its doors to hungry customers in 1947, the restaurant advertised "Real Mexican Food" on its classic roadside marquee and stood as the foundation of the famous Globe-Miami Mexican food dynasty.

Originally started in 1938 by matriarch Josephine Picazo and later run by her daughter Libby Bracamonte, the cafe earned statewide acclaim for authentic home-style dishes and its famous starter: thick, warm corn tortilla chips drizzled with real melted butter.

UPDATE: Today, Libby's El Rey Cafe on North Broad Street is permanently closed, and its vintage marquee has been removed from the streetfront. While the dining room is dark, its culinary influence lives on throughout the region. 08-26

With its steeply pitched roofline rising sharp against the desert sky, this eye-catching mid-century A-frame was built to grab the attention of drivers from blocks away.

The Los 7 Mares Restaurant operated out of a classic roadside A-frame structure in Phoenix, serving up traditional Mexican mariscos and coastal seafood favorites named after the famous seven-seas stew (caldo de siete mares). The dramatic peaked roof was a hallmark of 1950s and 60s roadside design—a style popularized by early national highway chains to create instant visual branding without needing a massive footprint.

By the time the camera captured this location around 2000, the vintage building was already showing its age while continuing to dish out hot plates of Mexican seafood to neighborhood regulars and passing motorists. 11-20

UPDATE: The vintage restaurant has closed its doors, and the original signs and mid-century A-frame presence have since vanished from the Phoenix roadside scene. 08-26

Mi Cocina Restaurant (Demolished)

Catching the eye of passing motorists with pure mid-century character, that grinning, sombrero-topped mascot was impossible to miss along the Tucson roadside.

The Mi Cocina Restaurant (or Mi Cocina Restaurante) served up traditional Mexican dining behind one of the town's most charming custom marquees. In an era when independent roadside eateries had to compete with emerging chains for the attention of passing drivers, the owners topped their sign with a large, smiling cartoon figure clad in a wide sombrero. The cheerful cutout gave the little spot instant personality, acting as a welcoming visual beacon that helped pull families and local regulars off the street and into a booth.

Over time, changing commercial footprints reshuffled the surrounding commercial strip, and the beloved neighborhood eatery eventually closed its doors for good. The vintage building and its smiling mascot sign were completely leveled to make way for modern corporate redevelopment. 09-21

UPDATE: The original restaurant was torn down, the mascot sign removed, and a Walgreens pharmacy now occupies the cleared parcel. Wow. 08-26

Rolling into Globe along Ash Street (US-60), the roadside sign for this long-standing copper-country staple marks a delicious piece of Arizona culinary history.

Chalo's Casa Reynoso carries a proud family lineage tracing all the way back to 1938, when family matriarchs began preparing homestyle Sonoran-style meals for local miners in the historic Globe-Miami copper basin. Originally opened here by Chalo Reynoso as Chalo's Rolling Pin, the roadside eatery eventually transitioned into Chalo's Casa Reynoso, preserving the region’s signature slow-simmered green chile recipes for generations of locals and highway travelers. The kitchen is best known for its legendary, award-winning Gollo Burro, which is a hearty favorite stuffed with tender pork chile verde, whole pinto beans, onions, and cheese, all smothered under rich sauce. 06-23

Heading down 4th Avenue near the corner of 2nd Street, the colorful exterior of this classic desert eatery has been a dependable roadside sight for locals and travelers passing through Yuma. Tacos Mi Rancho (sometimes referred to locally as Tacos Mi Ranchito) holds down the street corner with a classic, unpretentious Southwestern roadside stand aesthetic. Out front, vibrant hand-painted signage and colorful exterior artwork immediately catch the eye. Operating as an authentic counter-service kitchen, the spot has long been a go-to for hearty Sonoran-style comfort food, dishing out hot plates of savory carne asada, al pastor, and tender chile verde wrapped in fresh corn tortillas from early morning breakfast through the dinner rush. 06-23

UPDATE: Tacos Mi Rancho remains open and serving hungry customers along 4th Avenue, with its retro-styled outdoor signage intact on the property. 08-26
