Those twin tiled towers make the Santa Fe Depot in San Diego a little hard to mistake for an ordinary train station. Check out the Mission-style details on this downtown landmark, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. 06-07

Opened in 1915 for travelers attending the Panama-California Exposition, the depot offered quite a welcome to the city. Inside, a high-ceilinged waiting room and colorful tile gave passengers something to admire between trains.

UPDATE: The Santa Fe Depot remains an active transportation center for Amtrak, COASTER, and San Diego Trolley passengers. The old station is still putting its platforms to work. 10-26
