The promise of a little fun brought generations of skaters through the doors of Fiesta Roller Rink in San Gabriel. Located at 136 S. San Gabriel Boulevard, the rink belonged to the days when an evening out could mean a pair of rental skates, a few trips around the floor, and hopefully more time upright than holding onto the rail. Its colorful exterior gave passing motorists a hint of the entertainment waiting inside.

The Fiesta Roller Rink has been a San Gabriel Valley entertainment hub for years.

The building began life in 1949 as the Shamrock Roller Rink. Built specifically for skating, the low, sprawling structure featured projecting fins and a corrugated metal eave that gave the front a touch of mid-century style. It wasn’t a grand theater or an elaborate ballroom, but it became an important gathering place along the boulevard.

Music was part of the attraction from the beginning. The Shamrock’s history includes skating records cut at Hollywood’s Capitol Records, with rhythms suited to tangos, marches, waltzes, and the hokey pokey. Live bands performed during the 1960s, adding another kind of entertainment to a building already accustomed to keeping people moving.

Well, the Fiesta has joined these other skating rinks in the pages of history books. Yes, it's true. The Fiesta closed down in 2003 and the interior is now gutted. The Fun sign now longer hangs on the wall at the Fiesta Roller Rink.

In 1968, the Shamrock became Fiesta Roller Rink. The new name carried the business into another generation of skating, with the rink becoming a familiar part of growing up in the San Gabriel Valley. Places like Fiesta offered something simple: somewhere to meet friends, hear music, and spend an evening making circles without worrying too much about getting anywhere.

Fiesta also made its way onto the screen. The rink appears in the 1994 film Roadracers, preserving a moving glimpse of the skating floor during its working years. For former customers, those scenes offer another way to revisit a place that photographs can show only from one moment and angle.

UPDATE: Fiesta Roller Rink closed in 2003, ending more than half a century of skating at the address. The interior was subsequently remodeled for other uses, and by 2010 the building housed an airsoft store and warehouse. The city’s 2021 historic context statement documented the former rink building as still standing, though no longer used for skating.

The old Fiesta signs and colorful skating-era appearance are gone. What survives in photographs is the place generations remember: a familiar boulevard stop where the entertainment came on eight wheels. The music has ended and the floor has moved on to other purposes, but Fiesta still deserves another turn around the rink here at Roadside Peek. 10-26
