Here's the Shelby County Courthouse in Shelbyville, Illinois, sporting an unusual accessory. When this view was taken, a pumpkin covered one of the clock faces. Apparently, even the courthouse wanted to get into the Halloween spirit. 11-08

Completed in 1881, this is Shelby County's third courthouse. Its red brick, stone trim, corner towers, and elaborate central tower give it a distinctive Second Empire appearance. The tower clocks came from the former Main Street School, giving another piece of local history a useful home above downtown.

UPDATE: The courthouse continues to serve Shelby County at 301 East Main Street. It remains a centerpiece of the Shelbyville Historic District, listed on the National Register in 1976. The pumpkin was temporary, but the building has been keeping watch over town for well over a century. 07-26
