Big Sipper (Closed)

This big ol' cup advertising the Big Sipper is located off the road in Tooele, Utah. A good eye-catching piece of work, especially for travelers in need of a thirst quencher.

What is attention catching here is the giant cup itself. Roadside businesses have long used oversized objects to grab the attention of passing motorists, and it's hard to miss a drink cup this size sitting alongside the road.

Whether you stopped for a soda or just slowed down to take a look, the Big Sipper was one of those roadside attractions that added a little character to the drive through town. 12-07

UPDATE: The Big Sipper is no longer in business, and the giant cup that once advertised the stand has reportedly been removed from the property. 06-26

 

 

Master Muffler
Layton, UT

This strongman is located at Master Muffler in Layton, Utah. Master Muffler was a chain of muffler shops that could be found across Utah. At many of the locations, this friendly yet strong fella could be found carrying a shock absorber in one hand and a muffler sign in the other.

What is attention catching here is his size. These giant fiberglass figures were designed to get motorists to notice a business from a distance, and they still do a pretty good job of it today.

The strongman is one of the many surviving "Muffler Men" that once lined highways across America. While many have disappeared over the years, this one continues to stand watch over passing traffic in Layton. 10-06

UPDATE: The business now operates under the Master AutoTech name, but the giant strongman remains on duty outside the shop. The familiar roadside figure continues to greet motorists and remains one of Utah's surviving Muffler Men. 06-26
