Dales Donuts
Compton, CA

An enormous rooftop pastry gives Dale’s Donuts in Compton a roadside introduction that needs little explanation. The stand below handles the orders, while the giant donut announces breakfast to passing motorists. Quite a cousin to Randy’s and Kindle’s. 11-20

Built in 1955 as Big Do-Nut Drive-In No. 5, the shop belonged to Russell Wendell’s chain of oversized-donut landmarks. The donut-machine salesman certainly knew how to make a modest building stand out.

Dale’s earned national attention when its familiar sign was represented in the 2022 Super Bowl halftime-show set alongside other Compton landmarks. Apparently this neighborhood pastry stop was ready for a larger audience.

UPDATE: The giant donut survives at 15904 S. Atlantic Avenue. Dale's is still serving up donuts under the big donut on the roof. 10-26
