Check out the soaring A-frame at the Aku Aku Motor Inn in Woodland Hills. Its steep roof brought a little South Seas flair to Ventura Boulevard, giving arriving guests a much more dramatic welcome than an ordinary motel canopy.

The property later joined Best Western, with the old A-frame surviving for a time under the newer name. Even as the accommodations changed, the pointed roof remained a clue to the Aku Aku’s earlier identity.

A major makeover eventually traded that familiar outline for a semi-Mediterranean stucco frontage. The rooms carried on, but the entrance lost much of the flair that once distinguished it along the boulevard.

Check out the A-frame on this motel. Now part of the Best Western Chain, the Aku Aku appears to still be in good shape.

UPDATE: The Aku Aku’s A-frame was demolished in October 2006, and its original tiki signage was removed. The property continues as Best Western Woodland Hills Inn at 21830 Ventura Boulevard. The motel survived, but its old South Seas welcome did not. 10-26

UPDATE:There was renovation work done at this hotel and it may now be a regular square building. Many thanks to Faith Farberman for update. 11-07

UPDATE: The Aku Aku Motel is now the Best Western Woodland Hills Inn Apparently Faith's concern that the construction on site in 2007 would make the place a box was well justified. Many thanks to Faith Farberman for update and photos. 08-10
