This is one of the last H. Salt Fish and Chips places around. The original company is to be long been gone but a few franchises here and there still are doing great like this one. Many thanks to John Flores for info. 07-07

Just outside downtown Sacramento, check out the vintage roadside sign for H. Salt Fish & Chips. This little neighborhood storefront opened in 1969 and is one of the last surviving Northern California locations from the once-familiar H. Salt fast-food chain.

The Sacramento shop has been operated by the same family since 1990. Fish, shrimp, onion rings, and chips are still cooked to order using the traditional heavy batter. The old pole sign and nostalgic Seafood Galley interior add a little extra flavor to the visit.

UPDATE: H. Salt Fish & Chips remains open at the corner of 16th and E streets, with its original roadside sign still standing out front. 09-26

Check out the old roadside sign for H. Salt Fish & Chips on Meridian Avenue in San Jose. This was one of the neighborhood locations from the days when H. Salt restaurants were scattered across California. The familiar English-style sign made the restaurant easy to spot when it was time for some battered fish, thick chips, shrimp, onion rings, or a cup of clam chowder.

H. Salt began in Sausalito in 1965 and quickly grew into a sizable fast-food chain. KFC acquired the company in 1969 and continued expanding the brand, but most of the restaurants eventually disappeared. A few independently operated locations managed to carry on, preserving the familiar name, menu, and a little of the atmosphere people remembered.

For years, the Meridian Avenue location provided San Jose with the sort of quick seafood meal that was once common throughout the chain. The building was not fancy, but the big roadside sign gave it plenty of character. The restaurant eventually closed at this location, though H. Salt did not completely disappear from San Jose.

UPDATE: H. Salt relocated to Story Road in East San Jose, where it remains open as one of the last surviving Northern California locations of the once much larger chain. The old Meridian Avenue restaurant and its roadside sign are gone. 09-26
