Here's a roadside motel that may fit you to a T. The sign advertising the Tulare Inn is a sign you can't miss off the highway. Well, at least that's the way it used to be. This roadside icon of a sign was recently removed. Another of the highway's reminders of its past is now gone.
This sign high up the roadside points to the Tower Motel. Not sure where the motel really is though.
The Fresno Sands Motel marquee stands tall alongside Motel drive. From the looks of things, this must've been one huge establishment in its heyday.
Here's an old weather beaten marquee from the M & R Motel of Madera. This sign still proudly advertises air conditioning as a selling point.
The Del-Mar Motel still stands tall in Fresno. Check out this sign at night.
Here's a shot of the Vagabond Motor Hotel. The sign now looks rather worn... not sure what the lodging areas are now like these days. UPDATE 12/08 : The Vagabond Motor Hotel was to be demolished in early 2004 to make way for loft style apartments and commercial businesses. 12-08 UPDATE 03/09 : The Vagabond Motor Hotel is now the home to the Vagabond Lofts, which had its groundbreaking on December 18, 2004 and opened in 2006. 03-09
The 99 Motel in Atwater still features an old hanging marquee that used to be quite prevalent back in the early years of motor courts. UPDATE 07/06 : Unfortunately the sign was removed from this 99 treasure a few years ago. 07-06
Here's a rather famous inn located in San Luis Obispo. Ordinarily the Madonna Inn marquee, seen towards the background right, is sitting up near the roadside, welcoming travelers heading down the 101.
Sometimes a missing marquee means a new plastic backlit sign is coming soon. Fortunately in this case, the sign itself was located in the parking lot, fully restored! Photo courtesy Adriene Biondo The Madonna Inn opened in 1958 and was designed by Alex and Phyllis Madonna. Each of the 109 rooms are unique and have a special theme. See more information at the Madonna Inn's website.
UPDATE 10/06 : There is no sight of the motel building itself. Just the sign has been left for the last several years. 10-06 Mom's Motel (2006)
